Role of Female Characters in Fidelmans Epiphany in Naked Nude :: Naked Nude Bernard Malamud
Role of Female Characters in Fidelman's Epiphany in Naked Nude Word Count Includes Outlineà à à Thesis:à In his picturesque short story, "The Naked Nude", Bernard Malamud uses the female characters to develop, enact, and resolve Fidelman's epiphany and to bring about the protagonist's final, artistic self-understanding. Bernard Malamud, a leading contemporary Jewish author, skirts between fantasy and reality in his almost allegorical short fiction, teaching the reader a lesson through coinciding elements of beauty and comedy.à Venturing away from his usual, inner-city Jewish element, Malamud tackles new challenges of subject and setting in his novelistic collection of short stories, Pictures of Fidelman à à Malamud develops his protagonist through a series of six, interrelated short works, each of which may function entirely independent from the others.à In "The Naked Nude," for instance, Fidelman comes to a new, artistic maturity through his attempt to copy the famous painting "Venus of Urbino" by Titian Tiziano.à Malamud's recurring theme of self-knowledge through suffering permeates this short work.à Scarpio and Angelo, as primary antagonists, provide the bulk of this suffering for Fidelman.à It is his own mental captivity concerning the female nude, however, that gives cause for Fidelman's eventual epiphany as an artist and as an individual.à His relationship to the women in the work shapes his ability to capture the formà of the "Venus" and to come to grips with his own self-worth.à In "The Naked Nude," Bernard Malamud uses the female characters to develop, enact, and resolve Fidelman's epiphany and to bring about the protagonist's final, artistic self understanding.à à à à à à à à à à à à At the story's outset, Fidelman is forced to act as janitor and manservant to a group of ill mannered prostitutes under the employment of the padrone, Angelo.à These offensive characters establish the first of a series of mental obstacles in the imprisoned protagonist's attempt to copy Titian's nude.à Theyà torment Fidelman with cynical laughter and exploit his demeaning position.à His sexual insecurity is established at the beginning of the story when he ponders his violent guillotine sketch, asking "A man's head or his sex?...either case a terrible wound" (Malamud 318).à The limited omniscient narrator, revealing Fidelman's thoughts and feelings, also suggests that he could gain "no inspiration from whores,"à and that "maybe too many naked women around made it impossible to draw a nude" (Malamudà 325). à This illustrates Fidelman's early accreditation of his artistic impotency to desensitization.à He soon recogn izes, however, that the way in which he views the "Venus" also interrupts his progress.

Guide to Tailoring
What you have to keep in mind are the characteristics of a tailored garment, what a jacket always has: a rolled collar, lining, a straight-cuffed sleeve, and a lapel (which is the front of a coat; a continuation of the collar). After understanding what a tailored garment always includes, being familiar with the quality of standards always helps. First off, it should be fashionable and have an attractive fit on you. Having the proper waistline, length, sleeve fullness, and sleeve length appropriate for you and your style. The jacket should fit smoothly over your undergarments but have an appropriate amount of ease for the body movement; making sure that the neckline and the armholes fit your body without gapping or straining. Dart and design details should be properly placed as well as the shoulder length, unless your pattern calls for a dropped shoulder. Besides the fabric, choosing a pattern may be one of the trickiest parts because of the many styles and trends out there. Avoid styles that you have never worn before, choosing one that suits you in a flattering style, length, and fit and select a pattern designed for tailoring, Make sure to buy the same size your normally would because companies already add in the ease for people sewing with heavy or thick fabrics. If you want to be extra cautious you can add ââ¬Å"in-caseâ⬠seams on the existing pattern. There are other fitting techniques and alterations you can do if your jacket doesnââ¬â¢t fit right. If it is too big, you can include or increase the size of the darts, fold out excess fullness/fabric to make an area smaller, redraw darts and/or seam lines, or slash and overlap the fabric to decrease dimensions. If your jacket is too small, you can slash and spread the fabric to increase dimensions, decrease the size of the darts or take them out altogether, or just add fabric. Although if your jacket is too small, it may not have the desired look that you want after the alterations, so be careful. Lastly is the fabric, another hard part. The very first thing that you want to do is choose a fabric that is appropriate for the style you have chosen. You want a fabric that is heavy enough to give your garment body and shape but one that can also be molded (can be tailored easy). Be aware of fabric nap (so stripes/prints/patterns). You can use these fabrics but make sure you buy enough so that everything matches. Keep in mind that when all the fabrics are put together, you want your garment to look natural and not to stiff.

NO Figure Name Figure 1: Criterion for purchasing pirated products Figure 2: Category of pirated product purchased Figure 3: Criterion for not purchasing pirated products Figure 4: Impact of age on the buying behavior for pirated products ABSTRACT Non-deceptive pirated products have taken over a large share of the market and hence have become a major cause of concern in recent times. A study was conducted to find out the number of people who partake in non-deceptive piracy and the reasons behind their usage. The study was done based on data collected from 100 exponents from the city of Pun who were mostly students, working professionals and housewives aged 18 years to 50 years. The questionnaire sought their responses regarding the buying behavior of customers towards pirated products and the factors influencing buying decisions. It was found that 72 percent of the respondents and 65 percent agreed that after a certain age people prefer not to buy pirated products, specially clothes, shoes and accessories. This study benefits the manufacturers of authentic products to understand the mind-set of the consumers to decide their target market. Keywords: Non-Deceptive Pirated Products, Buying Behavior, Price Factor, Age Factor Chapter 1 Non-deceptive pirated products are reproductions of trademarked brands which are closely identical or similar to the genuine articles. This includes packaging, labeling and trademarks that facilitate the product to be passed off internationally as the original product. When customers are aware of the nature of the product and they still go and buy it, this is known as non-deceptive piracy. Non-deceptive piracy is used mainly to influence customers to buy the pirated products at a cheaper price and at a better rate than the market offers. Objectives . To find out the number of people who partake in non-deceptive piracy. 2. To find out the reasons behind the usage of non-deceptive pirated products. Limitations 1. Study limited to the city of Pun. 2. Non-disclosure of information which may mislead our statistics. Review of Literature In 2008, Seabird Raman, Seasonal Huge and Maybug Raman conducted a study on purchasing behaves of pirated products. The purpose of this study was to explore the factors influencing the Bangladesh consumers perception towards purchasing pirated products. To explore these factors, this study had conducted a survey among the Bangladesh consumers. The data analysis was conducted through exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling to test the hypotheses. Among the four variables, individual personalities and economic conditions are the most significant followed by social influences and pricing of pirated products. The outcome of this research showed a comprehensively integrated framework for policy maker and business enterprise to understand the dynamic relationships among dimensions of social influence, pricing, economy, and personality to understand the consumers perception toward purchasing pirated products. In 2010, Cook, Yum Fun conducted a study on the Buyers perceptions of pirated products in Malaysia. The purpose of this study was to investigate the buyers attitude and behavior with respect to pirated products in Malaysia, and to present findings potentially applicable for the purpose of planning and implementing effective marketing strategies to counteract the ever growing competitive threat facing multinational entrants to the Malaysia market. Respondents were classified as heavy and light buyers of pirated products based on the criteria derived from the focus group and survey findings. Buyers who were private sector employees were ore likely to be light buyers of other pirated products. The quota control was made on the ethnic groups percentages to represent the ethnic group perception on pirated products. However, convenience sampling limited the respondents locations, education level and occupation variety. The findings identified several crucial points as inputs to original brand marketers in planning and implementing marketing strategies. Research Methodology Selection of Topic The topic selected for this study is the Comparative study of the opinions or preferences of different age groups regarding non-deceptive pirated products. The primary source of information was from current and potential applicants obtained from a structured questionnaire. Sample technique and size The respondents in respect to current and potential applicants had been picked on the basis of random convenience sampling. The sample size of this study was 100 for current and potential applicants combined. These samples were selected from the city of Pun. Pilot study To test the feasibility of the data tool collection, a pilot study was conducted on 10 respondents. A questionnaire of 10 questions was made and filled by the respondents. The response received was collected and study was done to find out the initial findings. Hypothesis Based on the result of the pilot study, the following hypothesis was formulated:- 1 . Price is the key factor which influences people to buy pirated products. 2. Age has an impact on consumers preference to buy pirated products especially clothes, shoes and accessories. Data collection Primary data Actual collection of data from applicants was done by way of a Google doc in the form of an online questionnaire that was sent to the respondents which they then filled and their responses were recorded and the data was compiled. Secondary data Secondary data was not used for interpretation of data. Analysis of Data The data collected has been presented in the form of tables and figures in Chapter 4- Results.

African Diaspora essays
African Diaspora essays After the Civil War and the emancipation proclamation by Lincoln the slaves of America were free. This was a huge step in making our country truly free to all people. The reconstruction of the south did not however work out smoothly for the freed slaves. There were many roadblocks along the way such as the Black Codes, the Plessy vs. Ferguson case and the terror of the Ku Klux Klan. The 14th amendment gave the freed slaves citizenship and some voting rights. From the reconstruction the 14th amendment the black Codes and the Plessy vs. Ferguson case all had significance on the status of African Americans from reconstruction to 1900. The radical republicans method of reconstruction called for an amendment that would do three things. Extend citizenship for all people. Punish the southern representation in the house if they didnt allow black voting, and not allowing and former confederates to hold office. These three things made up the 14th amendment. Also in the radical republican recon struction plan was the idea of station military in the south. This was very effective in giving the blacks their rights. Unfortunally when the military left the rights of the blacks went with them. The white supremacists treated the south as 2nd class people and were not given opportunities to get any jobs but manual labor. Also the KKK was formed to scare away blacks from voting and keep them in their so-called place, the plantation. The 14th amendment was a good thought, but it did not work out how the radical republicans had hoped going into the 1900s After Lincoln was shot in December of 1965, vice president Andrew Johnson took over office. He was a southern man and was not interested in blacks having the same rights as white people. Infact he encouraged southern states to intact laws limiting the blacks freedom. These laws were called black codes. They ranged in harshness through out the states but in all...

Impact of an ageing population on the business environment and on Essay
Impact of an ageing population on the business environment and on business organization - Essay Example This conflict is therefore a major concern in the minds of economists and politicians alike, as this will put increasing pressure on the budget, and of a more fundamental concern, the likely slowdown in economic growth. With this conflict getting more and more fuelled by critics, Peter Costello has been forced to step in and put forward a resolution to this dispute. He has recently proposed a campaign to stop people from retiring early, allowing them to work past the current age restriction of 65. From the viewpoint of the individual there is a double gain. The longer you work before retiring, the more time you have to keep adding to your superannuation and your retirement savings. But, on top of that, the less time you spend in retirement, the longer your retirement savings will last you. (Barnett 2000, 69-74) From the viewpoint of the federal budget, the more people save before they retire and the later they retire after 65, the less the Government has to pay them in age pension payments and the less it has to spend on health care concessions and such like. If this policy is embraced by the aged, (who should very well be concerned about their financial futures), it will solve many of other conflicts in our society. One of these is that of elder abuse. Where the elderly are forced to take care of their grandchildren while the parents go out and endeavour careers. If the aged are working, then this issue will simply not arise. Also, due to their job commitments, muggings and violence against the aged will decrease and this will lead to greater satisfaction of life, and their general well being. (Tay 2001, 42-49) Also if they spend more time out in the workforce, they may be more susceptible to changes in technology as their work may require simple training in computer technologies such as the Internet. This will reduce the conflict of technology, in their future, enhancing their lifestyle as they take advantage of timesaving (maybe body-saving in their case) features of the Internet, like Internet banking. Also the issue of reluctance of employers to employ older people will significantly reduce. As they will KNOW that these people have 5-10 years extra left in them, hence they WILL give them that promotion and the respect which the aged so badly desire. It sometimes seems as though the aged have more than their share of critical emotional problems. They also sometimes have more than their share of psychological help at their disposal. And almost every helping procedure that effectively copes with human concerns is successfully applicable to the problems of the aged. Psychotherapy can be helpful to old people. Family therapy 'works'. Poetry and art therapy 'work'. Given the skill and sensitivity of the clinician - and the willingness to provide a service to an old-person - therapies of many types can be successful. (Barnett 2000, 69-74) But, although resolving many financial and emotional issues for the aged, this policy still doesn't account

Carbon Forestry in the Gola Rainforest in Sierra Leone Essay
Carbon Forestry in the Gola Rainforest in Sierra Leone - Essay Example WE will also examine drivers of deforestation and degradation in the Gola forest. Qualitative study using maps was used in Sierra Leone on developments of the REDD+ mechanism in helping address deforestation. While REDD+ carries potential benefits, the prospects for its successful implementation in a developing country like Sierra Leone faces multiple challenges to meeting both its objectives and opportunities to improve livelihood of the local communities. Global forests, particularly tropical rainforests, play a key role in climate regulation. They provide a range of other benefits such as rainfall for agriculture, flood prevention and biodiversity. However, human activities have significant impacts on forests which in turn affect climate and wider ecosystem services. Deforestation is a major contribution to climatic changes, deforestation alone has contributed to about 20 percent of global greenhouse gases (Gullison et al., 2007). In West Africa, the moist and semi deciduous forests that stretch across Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea, Cote D Ivoire and Ghana have attracted attention as the assumed remainder of a once Upper Guinea forest ecosystem has progressively reduced due to deforestation and degradation. In various ways, international climate change negotiations have created opportunities and attention to the task of how to effectively slow down deforestation in developing countries. It would not only reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, but would also provide additional benefits to the climate system including preserving the net carbon sink that may be present in old growth tropical forests and protect the environment. The basic goal is to preserve trees that would otherwise be cut down and thus release carbon dioxide, the most commonly emitted greenhouse gas. The REDD document specifically encourages parties to explore a range of actions, identify options,

Chief Information Security Officer Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Chief Information Security Officer - Term Paper Example The repercussions of these breaches are felt by multiple parties including the administrative staff, the university itself, the IT department and the student body. It is therefore, imperative for higher education institutions to familiarize themselves with the constantly changing threats besides the high cost associated with leaving data and systems unprotected. Introduction Computer system hacks and data breaches with higher education institutions as the main target are constantly dominating the headlines. The higher education institutions are increasingly at high risk having their information and data compromised by malicious activities and hackers beside insider mistakes. The considerable number of system hacks and data breaches experienced by higher educational institutions can be attributed to such factors as resource plague issues experienced by IT department within the institutions, budgetary constraints and desperate database systems among other factors (Gahm, 2010). Higher e ducational institutions posses a considerable amount of data and distinct data type which make them a potential target by malicious attackers and hackers. A wealth of personally identifiable information is mostly stored by these institutions thus the high risk of data breaches and system hacks. A health record of students, employees and parents together with their names, social security numbers and credit card numbers are among the sensitive information that subject these institutions to potential threats and makes them a valuable target to the hackers. (Gahm, 2010) According to Gahm, Higher educational institutions should learn to take actions besides implementing proactive security to their database infrastructure in order to protect the critical information contained in their database systems. These database systems house a variety of information that can be exploited for financial gain. Given that the institutionââ¬â¢s databases are the most critical repository of confidentia l and sensitive information at these institutions, safeguarding the database is of the essence (2010). Recent hack attacks against higher educational institutions Some of the top and best universities around the world had recently been reported to have fallen victim of computer system hack and data breaches. Team GhostShell, a hacking group claimed to have hacked into the servers of close to a hundred universities across the globe including Harvard, University of Pennsylvania, Stanford and University of Michigan. Close to 120,000 records were accessed from the breached universitiesââ¬â¢ servers and publicly posted. Critical and confidential information such as the names, phone numbers, log in details and email addresses were among the records exposed in the event of the breaches. The reports further showed that the hackers used malware injection into the servers in order to compromise their security and gain access to the records. The log-in credentials exposed were further used to improperly access some of the universitiesââ¬â¢ websites including Stanford University. Another data breach incident involving Western Connecticut State University was reported and blamed on the vulnerabilities existing on their computer systems. The breach utilized the existing vulnerabilities in the system and inappropriately accessed and exposed confidential inf
