Spinal Stenosis Essays -- Disease/Disorders
The spine is made up of bones known as the vertebrae which are each separated by discs that serve to reduce the impact that movement may have on the spinal column thus acting as a movable support structure. The spine is made up of seven vertebrae in the neck known as the cervical spine, twelve vertebrae in the mid-back known as the thoracic spine and 5 vertebrae in the low back known as the lumbar spine. There is a hollow space that runs down the middle of each vertebra that contains the spinal cord known as the spinal canal. The spinal nerves exit the spinal canal via the intervertebral foramen. It is imperative that these canals maintain enough room to support the spinal cord and spinal nerves. Spinal stenosis occurs when the canals narrow causing irritation or pressure on the spinal cord or the spinal nerves, depending on which area of the spine is affected. As the canals narrow, there is less space for the spinal cord and nerves to move without restraint. Spinal stenosis is a de generative condition that can occur in any area of the spine, although it is most prevalent in the lumbar area. Lumbar spinal stenosis is a reduction in the dimension of the central or lateral lumbar spinal canal that occurs most frequently as a result of chronic degenerative changes (Celik et al., 2012). The narrowing may be caused by either congenital or acquired etiologies, or in some rare cases, both. Congenital stenosis is also known as primary stenosis which occurs during postnatal development meaning it is seen at birth. Acquired stenosis or secondary stenosis occurs after the normal development of the spine in which the narrowing occurs due to an acquired condition such as degenerative stenosis, spinal instability or trauma. Muzak :: Personal Narrative Papers
Muzak Ã
.a true storyÃ
So there I was last year, walking through the supermarket on an afternoon like any other, trying to get everything I needed: Ã
picking over the vegetables, as out of a murky fog, I realized that my foot was tapping out a sonorous beat, apparently out of my concentration. What's more amazing, I now see, is that the lazy rhythm from my foot matches a melody which has been ringing behind my thoughts as I decided what kind of onions to buy&emdash;also without me being fully aware of it. All of a sudden, a minor physical revulsion causes me to set down my basket on the produce, my body trying to exorcise this foreign invasion. What is this thing? And that tune! It sounds like a watered-down version of Eric Clapton's acoustic "Layla", terribly deflated and played by a bunch of sixty-year-old orchestra players&emdash;I am still not too sure. But it will not seem to go awayÃ
.the soothing sounds turn malicious as they bounce off the walls of the nutrition center, the meat department, housewares. Everyone I see is milling around like before, are they hearing what fills my ears? Is that same insidious song playi ng with their minds? Now that I focus on the music rambling from the loudspeaker in the ceiling, it appears as if they are all part of a silent movie&emdash;acting against a separate, unrelated soundtrack. When I first started exploring background music, I came to realize that the issue involves much more than those whiny songs wafting from crappy mono speakers in department stores. It stretches far beyond these simple associations, significantly affecting the changing workplace and worker control, as well as the site of consumption and consumer control. Muzak is now a tool widely used around the world&emdash;liked by most people, revered by some, and detested by others. That's Muzak, not 'muzak' It is important to understand here that Muzak is not just another term for background (or, annoying) music; it should not be confused with the numerous impostors which play in elevators and the like. It is the name of an American corporation and its sophisticated business programming . As one of its brochures explains succinctly, "The raw material of Muzak is music." And why is music unable to achieve the same results as their product? Because music is art, but Muzak it science. And when you employ the science of Muzak: in an office, workers tend to get more done, more efficiently, and felt happier.

Concept Design Services
Case 1 ââ¬â Design house Partnerships at concept design services Case summary The case is all about CDS (Concept Design services) , earlier they were in to business to consumer business by d product name of ââ¬Å"Focusâ⬠now they have moved from business to consumer to business to business format. They have tied up with many design house and they give them the design which they manufacture and then distribute to the customer. They also moved from manufacturing focus products to high ââ¬â quality stylish home wares with a high design value. CDS has become Europe most profitable home ware businesses; it was originally founded in 1960s. The company has moved from making industrial mouldings mainly in the aerospace sector, and some cheap home ware products. The move into concept was initiated by Marketing Director Linda fleet. She had prior exp in decorative products industry. She had d gut feeling that correct product with appropriate promotion and marketing can earn big profits to the company. The company moved to design house partnership with the facility to provide distribution services as well. The company changed its manufacturing unit with high end machinery with many moulds which gave them around 600 % increase in productivity. The most successful design partnership was with villessi , Italian design house. Their manufacturing operations were gr8 in terms of scheduling and planning for a product. They had good machinery which utilises their full capacity. There were some challenges for the company as well as there was issue within the company as they were pushed to a limit. But it was good in some way. The main objective or key to future was building and retaining design expertise will be the key to the future. The company had an edge with design and finishing of the product as they were into making aerospace products which gave them this expertise. Now they are the leader in euro market, but they are thinking what should be their future plans and what product venture they should do in future. Or we can say the issue for debate in company was long term beyond their expertise as the two changes they made earlier were already their strength. Concepts â⬠¢ Input transformation output processes. â⬠¢ Operations topology. â⬠¢ General model of operations Management and operation strategy. Questions Why is operations management important in CDS? Operations management is important in CDS (Concept Design services) if they are to continue being one of Europeââ¬â¢s most profitable home ware businesses. As with any other company, CDS objective is to add value to their final product while using its resources effectively and efficiently through its internal processes like planning, schedulin g, control, quality. The company has successfully been able to apply the technology used in the aerospace sector into home ware items, through the mastering of injection moulding machines. Moreover, the company has expanded into a premium home ware product market from low end product i. e. ââ¬Å"Focusâ⬠, integrating new functions within its operations, such as forming partnerships with reputable designers and increasing the volume and complexity of its production i. e. High design value products and outsources the low end low profit making product i. e. ââ¬Å"Focusâ⬠brand. â⬠¢ Draw a 4 Vââ¬â¢s profile for the companyââ¬â¢s products/services. Volume:à High/ low. it can be drawn that production volume is high as it has increased 600% since the buying of new large multi-cavity moulds and machinery. Another ndication of high volume production is the fact that CDS decided to subcontract their Focus line to other moulding companies, so they could focus on the production of their premium line (Concept Design). But as itââ¬â¢s not mention in the case so we canââ¬â¢t be sure of the volume aspect. It can be low as well high. Variety:à High. CDS m arket is a highly competitive one, in which design innovation determines the longevity i. e. Long term of the firm. CDS capacity of developing products that are in fashion and moreover, its adaptability to change as fashion changes is key to the survival of the firm. Variation:à High. For the same reason as with variety, CDS is forced to continuously produce innovative designs that would keep their customers interested and therefore keep demand high. Visibility:à Mixed high and low. â⬠¢ What would you recommend to the company if you were asked to advice on improving its operations? There are 2 areas that CDS needs to improve:à the relationship between its designers and other parts of the company (such as the manufacturing and distribution, planning) and a better forecasting of sales. The designers donââ¬â¢t get to spend enough or any time on the ââ¬Ëfloorââ¬â¢ of the company, that is, they do not have an in depth understanding of the manufacturing processes and the way they are affected by their decision making. If they could spend some time doing ââ¬Ëcross trainingââ¬â¢ they would get a real idea of the manufacturing processes. Departments should have a better collaboration. As per Linda its a fashion industry so predictions canââ¬â¢t be accurate, but it should be to accurate to a point where there is better planning and accuracy of decisions.

Sociology Unit G671
* Complicit masculinity ââ¬â the ââ¬Ënew man' that is willing to cook tea, pick up the children from school and put the washing on. * Subordinate masculinity ââ¬â the ââ¬Ëgay man' * Marginalised masculinity ââ¬â the hegemonic man today. Associated with the working class, as this group of males can't get the typical jobs, mining etc due to loss of industry so they can't fulfil their ââ¬Ëdestiny' Firstly, the family socialises masculinity in a number of ways. A study by Ann Oakley argues that gender socialisation takes place in 4 ways: Manipulation ââ¬â Parents encourage behaviour, which is seen as normal for the child's gender and discourage what is seen as deviant for example, boys are encouraged from an early age to take part in playing football and discouraged from taking part in ballet lessons. * Canalisation ââ¬â this involves channelling the child's interests to toys and activities seen as normal for his or her sex. An example of this is boys playing with toy cars and ââ¬Ëaction men' Verbal appellation ââ¬â the names that children are called which teaches gender appropriate behaviour for example, ââ¬Å"big boys don't cryâ⬠and the tone of voice used. * Different activities ââ¬â children are encouraged to involve themselves in different activities for example, boys playing together to make a camp. Although Ann Oakley did her research 30 years ago and is considered out of date, a more recent study by Joanna Smith (1997) reinforces Oakley's points. Feature Article ââ¬âà Sociology TestA recent study also said that the family is stereotypically gendered to males, breadwinners and females, caring roles. (Charles 2002) This shows that boys can learn these roles from looking at their father's behaviour. Secondly media plays a role in influencing masculinity. There are a range of different Medias, we can actively choose what we watch on the television and what magazines we read, however, to a degree, it is all around us. The adverts that are on

Purpose Essay
Purpose Essay The purpose I feel passionate about is helping youth who struggle with mental illness. I've chosen this because I know how difficult life can be when one has to deal with these challenges on a daily basis; in my case that is Social Anxiety and COD. The way Social Anxiety has affected my life is that it has made it very difficult to have relationships with family and peers. I don't participate in activities that I would have otherwise been involved in and just overall it keeps me from wanting to be out in the world.COD has altered my life to the point where life is inflexible. By that I mean I feel compelled to follow certain routines every day and constantly worry about different things. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAME), ââ¬Å"mental disorders in children and adolescents are real and can be effectively treated, especially when identified and treated early. ââ¬Å"(l) ââ¬Å"Nonetheless, the ventilating majority of children with mental disorde rs fail to be identified, lack access to treatment or supports and thus have a lower quality of life.Stigma persists and millions of young people in this country are left behind. ââ¬Å"(2) Through my research I have learned how serious the consequences can be for young people who do not get treatment. The most serious outcomes can be ââ¬Å"suicide, school failure and juvenile and criminal Because of my own suffering and that of other children and teens, would like to make a difference in the lives of those who have been impacted by mental illness by starting a blob, where they can share their feelings about their battles, so that hey won't feel so alone. Also, by writing about their lives and telling their stories, hopefully it will advise young people who don't have a mental illness about what those who do go through. My blob would feature adults who have dealt with mental health challenges when they were younger, and in their own words, how they overcame them. In addition, I woul d include suggestions for students on how they can support their friends who have a mental illness. Finally, would add resources like links to websites to go for ore information on mental health organizations, providers, peer groups, etc.

My Bondage, My Freedom Fredrick Douglass Essay
ââ¬Å"It was not color, but crime, not God, but man that afforded the true explanation of the existence of slavery; nor was I long in finding out another important truth, what man can make, man can unmakeâ⬠(Douglass 59). In My Bondage and My Freedom, Fredrick Douglass explains in detail the harsh and cruel realties of slavery and how slavery was an institution that victimized not only slaves, but slave holders, and non-slave holding whites. Fredrick Douglass could not have been more right with his observation of slavery. In my opinion, slavery is not only an institution, but is a prime example of a corrupt business model that thrives on free labor, ultimate control, and wealth. ââ¬Å"A business is only as good as its workers. â⬠Itââ¬â¢s a common saying in modern day America. That saying would hold true during slavery, however slaves were not considered workers. Workers have rights and wages; Slaves on the other hand had no rights as human beings and no wages. Slaves were considered a property, no more useful than a mule or cattle. Slaves were apart of a system and in that system they were dehumanized to the point that they became an expendable commodity. Slaves were stripped of there individuality. Fredrick Douglass recalls not the date, month, or year when he was born. He also stated that the institution of slavery did away with the concept of family. Douglass had neither recollection of a father nor any account of his existence. Further more, Douglass had only a handful of encounters with his mother before her death and had become nothing more than a stranger to his brothers and sisters. ââ¬Å"It had made my brothers and sisters strangers to me; it converted the mother that bore me, into a myth, it shrouded my father in mystery, and left me without an intelligible beginning in the worldâ⬠(Douglass 39). ââ¬Å"In 1840, 20 years before the Civil War, 60% of American exports were cotton and was produced mainly by slavesâ⬠(Shaping America: Lesson 16). Therefore, the business of slavery favored the slave holders, who were capitalizing on free labor to produce and distribute products across the world. Greed is the undertone upon which Douglass states that slavery ââ¬Å"corrupted soulsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"turned good people into bad people. â⬠The institution of slavery was based on the ultimate control and power over a human to whom he is stripped of all of his identity and becomes sub-human. Consequently, the institution forces slave holders had to buy into this concept in order to justify any and all cruelty toward slaves. Douglas states ââ¬Å"Slave holders resort to all kinds of crueltyâ⬠and later describes various ways of torture and punishment ââ¬Å"all are in requisition to keep the slave in his condition as a slave in the United Statesâ⬠(Douglass 272). Slave holders showed no mercy when reprimanding slaves. The brutality and cruelty of these punishments were more of a statement of power and control and often times the punishment was worse than the offense. ââ¬Å"Racism was used aggressively to divide poor white southerners from slaves. The relationship between the wealthy and the poor was aggressively exploited by the rich white slave holder to ensure the poor whites non-slave holder that they had a similar causeâ⬠(Shaping America: Lesson 16). This caused non-slave holding whites to have a similar view as latter. Non-slave holding whites were in direct competition with slaves and more often than not were forced out of work due to the free labor slavery had offered. In conclusion, ââ¬Å"Slavery is always slavery; always the same foul, haggard, and damning scourge, whether found in the eastern or in the western hemisphereâ⬠(Douglass 294). Fredrick Douglass could not have been more right with his observation of slavery. Slavery is a cruel and punishing way to oppress any human. ââ¬Å"The slave is a human being, divested of all rights reduced to the level of a brute, a mere ââ¬Å"chattelâ⬠in the eye of the law placed beyond the circle of human brotherhood cut off from his kind his name, which the ââ¬Å"recording angelâ⬠may have enrolled in heaven, among the blest, is impiously inserted in a masterââ¬â¢s ledger, with horses, sheep, and swineâ⬠(Douglass 293). The business aspect of slavery is even more disheartening. However, All parties involved (slaves, slave holders, and non-slave holders) were all affected by the institution of slavery and in the mist of all the hardships that he endured for over twenty years of his life Fredrick Douglass became a free man.

Technology implementation paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Technology implementation paper - Essay Example The traditional business generally relies on a series of technologies, including separate payroll systems, distinct inventory and warehousing applications, and various accounting software in order to meet the needs of the business environment. When such a disconnected series of systems exists, the business tends to require multiple support staff, from the information technology team to the end-user, in order to make the business function efficiently. However, in the fast-paced, contemporary business environment, with rising labor costs and the economics of cost reduction initiatives, the need for a more enhanced, streamlined method of doing business is required so as to stay competitive within any particular industry. For firms in search of enhanced business applications, SAP can mean the difference between business success or failure. purchasing, human resources, and logistics, into a singular program (Blackstone & Bujold, 2005). The process of implementing SAP is not a simplistic operation, as with most companies the set-up process involves group representatives from each division of the business, who must offer advice and suggestion to the SAP programmers in order to incorporate actual business practice into the design of the new technology, thus making SAP a unique application, custom-tailored for the needs of each individual firm. Having offered a brief understanding of SAP and its purpose, this report will highlight the long-term plan required for incorporating this application across the domestic divisions of ABC Industries. There are four phases required to SAP implementation: The planning stage, blueprint and training development, tangible program development, and the testing phase, in which a significant portion of the business staff are involved in running divisional scenarios to test the integrity of the system and the viability of its programmed features (Vogle, 2004). This process, based on the needs of ABC Industries, will
